Inflammation remains an unsolved mystery in ischemic stroke. Frederik Denorme, M.D., discusses mechanistic regulators of neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation in stroke and its contribution to ischemic stroke outcomes. Platelets were identified as the critical source for plasma HMGB1, driving NET formation and exacerbating stroke outcomes. This presentation discusses a pathological role for platelet-derived HMGB1in mediating NET formation and the need for further investigation into targeting NETs to improve stroke outcomes.
